Economic and sociopolitical worldview
- Marxism is a [[Political philosophy | political philosophy]] and method of [[Socioeconomics | socioeconomic]] analysis. It uses a [[Dialectical materialism | dialectical materialist]] interpretation of historical development, better known as [[Historical materialism | historical materialism]], to analyse [[Social class | class]] relations, [[Social conflict | social conflict]], and [[Social transformation | social transformation]]. Marxism originates with the works of 19th-century German philosophers [[Karl Marx]] and [[Friedrich Engels]]. Marxism has developed over time into various branches and [[School of thought | schools of thought]], and as a result, there is no single, definitive [[Marxist philosophy | Marxist theory]]. Marxism has had a profound effect in shaping the modern world, with various [[Left-wing politics | left-wing]] and [[Far-left politics | far-left]] political movements taking inspiration from it in varying local contexts.
- In addition to the various schools of thought, which emphasise or modify elements of [[Classical Marxism | classical Marxism]], several Marxian concepts have been incorporated into an array of [[Social theory | social theories]]. This has led to widely varying conclusions. Alongside Marx's [[Critique of political economy | critique of political economy]], the defining characteristics of Marxism have often been described using the terms "dialectical materialism" and "historical materialism", though these terms were coined after Marx's death and their tenets have been challenged by some self-described Marxists.
- As a school of thought, Marxism has had a profound effect on society and global academia. To date, it has influenced many fields, including [[Anthropology | anthropology]], [[Marxist archaeology | archaeology]], [[Marxist aesthetics | art theory]], [[Marxist criminology | criminology]], [[Cultural studies | cultural studies]], [[Marxian economics | economics]], [[Education | education]], [[Marxist ethics | ethics]], [[Marxist film theory | film theory]], [[Marxist geography | geography]], [[Marxist historiography | historiography]], [[Marxist literary criticism | literary criticism]], [[Media studies | media studies]], philosophy, [[Political science | political science]], [[Political economy | political economy]], [[Freudo-Marxism | psychology]], [[Science studies | science studies]], [[Marxist sociology | sociology]], [[Urban planning | urban planning]], and [[Theatre | theatre]].
